A turnaround is a planned outage to do work that can't be done while the unit runs. This page covers the generic timeline, how to screen scope, how to triage work found during the outage, and how TAR work is handled in SAP PM.

Estimate & contractor packages
Rough estimate (T-9), contractor bid packages by scope (mechanical, I&E, specialty), then approval estimate (T-4) [T2].
- T-6 → T-3
Schedule integration
Export orders and operations to MS Project or Primavera P6; build shutdown, execution and startup logic; critical path; resource-level by craft; lock schedule by about T-3 [T5].

- T+1 → T+3
Scope screening criteria
Requires the unit down
Cannot be done safely or physically while running (vessel entry, exchanger pulls, isolation not possible online).
Safety / regulatory
Inspection due dates, SIS proof tests that can only be done offline, permit or code commitments.
Reliability / risk
Known degradation or bad actor that would cause an unplanned outage before the next window.
Economic / capital
Approved project tie-ins and improvements with funding (WBS / investment order).
Ready to plan
Clear scope, technical object identified, engineering complete, long-lead materials orderable in time.
Not TAR scope
Can be done online, has no reason to be in the outage, or is not funded / engineered: keep in routine backlog.
Criteria are illustrative
Emergent / discovery work triage
TAR handling in SAP PM
1Group TAR work with a revision
A revision (maintenance revision) is a time window on a planning plant. Each TAR order is tagged with the revision in the order header so the whole outage can be filtered, reported and scheduled together.
2Filter the TAR worklist
Use the order list with the revision selection to pull every TAR order for planning status, readiness and cost reviews.
3WBS-based TARs
Some sites run the TAR as a project: a WBS per area or package, with orders assigned to WBS elements for budget and cost tracking.
4Export to scheduling tools
Orders and operations (hours, work centers, dates) are exported to MS Project or Primavera P6 for logic and critical path, then dates and progress are brought back. Method varies: report export, interface or add-on.
5Capacity & materials
Check craft loads against contractor headcount; track TAR material reservations and long-lead purchase requisitions.

Typical TAR scope · Mechanical
Heat exchangers
Bundle pull, clean (hydroblast / chemical), tube inspection (eddy current / UT on critical service), tubesheet and baffle checks, plug or retube, hydrotest, new gaskets [V10].
Columns / towers
Open, clean, tray-by-tray inspection numbered from the drawings: deposits, corrosion, cracks, stuck or missing valves, downcomers, seal and draw pans; punch list before box-up [P3].
Pressure vessels & drums
Internal inspection and NDT by the inspection group (API 510 basis), internals and demister repair, fitness-for-service where degraded, box-up inspection sign-off [V11].
Relief valves (PSVs / PRVs)
Remove, bench test (as-found set pressure), overhaul seat / spring / guides, reset, re-test, tag and reinstall with records; inlet / outlet line checks (API RP 576 basis) [P4] [V11].
Pumps
Overhaul of pumps that cannot be isolated online: seals, bearings, wear rings, impeller, alignment and as-left vibration baseline.
Rotating equipment overhauls
Compressor and turbine overhauls (often OEM-supported): rotor inspection, bearings, seals, governor/trip checks; long lead for rotors and parts.
Piping & valves
Piping inspection / replacement (API 570 basis), block valve repair or replacement, blinds list and flange management, bolting to spec [V11].
Typical TAR scope · I&E
SIS / SIF proof tests
End-to-end tests (sensor → logic → final element) including trip points, alarms and valve response, for functions that can only be tested offline. Record every fault, even a small calibration error (IEC 61511 basis) [P2] [V9] [V8].
Analyzers
Analyzer and sample-system overhaul, calibration and validation; gas detectors calibration [V8].
Control valve overhauls
Walk-down with diagnostics and as-found photos, then repair vs replace; trim, packing, seat rings, actuator; stroke test and diagnostics after repair [V7] [V8].
Transmitter calibration
Pressure, flow, level and temperature calibration with as-found / as-left records; replace failed devices [V8].
MCC / switchgear PMs
Electrical equipment that needs the unit or bus de-energized: cleaning, torque checks, IR thermography follow-up, protective relay testing, breaker maintenance (NFPA 70B basis) [P6].
Loop checks & function tests
Loop checks after any instrument or wiring work, interlock function tests, and startup verification before handback [V8].
